Juan José Mendez León is the sixth generation of master distillers from Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, the world capital of mezcal.
With a generational family tradition, Juan José is one of the oldest families producing in their palenques this precious liquid almost sacred for the locals and it is all based on the processes and its people, those artisan hands that day by day produce a part of that long process in the elaboration of mezcal.
The Mendez family is considered a family of tradition in Oaxaca and their palenques that produce mezcal and distribute it almost all over the world is one of the most powerful families and at the same time humble, incredible clients and on this occasion it was my turn to document the beautiful process of the elaboration of the precious liquid.
Trying to document the process of the hand of the people and people who are the main actors in this process of movement and almost through mystical rituals that take these mini processes in days to extract mezcal from the pineapples of the different agaves.
